(Los Angeles, CA) - Timed for tax season, Los Angeles Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) partnered with KBIG-104.3 (Los Angeles) and News Talk-1470AM (Antelope Valley) on a "Wacky Warning Label" contest, highlighted by hundreds of listener entries from both stations and the announcement of three listeners who won back their "lawsuit tax" of $886.
According to a recent report by Tillinghast-Towers Perrin, the cost of lawsuits amounts to a "lawsuit tax" burden of $886 for every man, woman and child in America. The cost of lawsuits and liability is added into the price we pay for our food, healthcare and other services that we use everyday.
LA CALA offered listeners of both stations the opportunity to get their lawsuit tax money back by winning CALA's "Wacky Warning Label" contest. In order to qualify, contestants were asked to submit their most outrageous wacky warning label, whether real or imagined. Demonstrating the popularity of the promotion, more than 450 entries were submitted during the first week on KBIG and more than 800 were received during the contest by both stations.
"LA CALA is thrilled by the number of entries and expressions of support we received from citizens throughout Los Angeles for our work against frivolous lawsuits. The response shows the positive impact LA CALA is having on increasing awareness of this important problem," said Peter Bylsma executive director of Los Angeles CALA.
The winning entries were, for KBIG, an entry submitted taken from a childrens' Halloween costume that read "cape does not allow wearer to fly" and for News Talk 1470, a label on a microwave that read "do not microwave pets."
Other entries of note included:
-
A label on a snow blower reading "do not use on the roof"
-
A wine bottle label reading "do not microwave"
-
A curling iron label warning "Do not use while sleeping"
-
Consumers are warned on a bottle of sleeping pills, "May cause drowsiness"
-
A label on a baby stroller warning to "remove child before folding"
