What is newsworthy about Judge Harmon's order for the Lerach firm to pay some of Alliance Capital's legal fees ("Lerach's Triumph1," Review & Outlook, Dec. 22) is that it was actually newsworthy. How ironic that our legal system, which is designed to compensate victims of negligence from professionals of all stripes, nearly always finds it necessary to exempt its own from any sort of accountability. Until lawyers are routinely held accountable for their own negligence, whether in initiating or maintaining a civil action, our justice system will continue to disappoint nearly everyone except those lawyers who game the system.
