In response to statement that the Los Angeles
Superior Court system is considering closing courts to save money,
Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse suggested that the courts should
cut waste before they start cutting courts.
"In the jury serving process alone, a conservative
estimate is that the L.A. Court system wastes over a half million
dollars in postage," stated Mike Vallante, Executive Director
of CALA. They send jury summons to dead people, dogs, convicted
criminals and non-citizens. In 2000 that amounted to nearly 1.7
million inaccurate summonses. Let's cut that waste before we look
at reducing court services, "stated Vallante.
CALA was citing a comprehensive study of the
California Court System that was conducted by Professor Daniel
Klerman, a law professor at the University of Southern California.
A copy of that study is available through the CALA office.
"At a time when we really need more qualified
jurors to show up and serve, the last thing we need is an inefficient
process wasting taxpayer dollars and forcing courthouses to close,"
concluded Vallante.
