Dear Editor:

Re: “Lawyers Bid Up Value Of Web-Search Ads,” (4/8/04)

It’s a shame that online legal-ad spending has risen 580% in the last year, as law firms pay $50 to $70 a click to have their web sites associated with search terms like "mesothelioma," (“Lawyers Bid Up Value of Web-Search Ads,” April 8, 2004). The low stakes and high rewards from attracting asbestos-related defendants prove personal injury lawyers are greedy and are using their clients as bait.

Too often personal injury attorneys attack companies with meritless accusations, but because mesothelioma and asbestos have a legitimate link, these attorneys can suck companies dry, leaving wastelands of what used to be thriving enterprises. Jobs are affected when companies go bankrupt or stifle research and development because of large settlements.

The people who deserve retribution are left to pay high attorneys’ fees, which go to pay for more advertising to entice the next victim. It’s time this cycle ends and personal injury lawyers are exposed for their true motives.

Sincerely,

Linda K. Okun, Executive Director
