Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Re: “Signatures submitted for initiative
to change Calif Consumer Law,” April 13, 2004
I was happy to learn that the initiative to reform
California’s Unfair Competition Law is one step closer to
being included on the November ballot (Signatures submitted for
initiative to change Calif consumer law,” April 13, 2004).
After all, is it fair for unscrupulous lawyers
threaten to sue a small business over the wrong font size in an
advertisement and then extort settlement money? The ballot initiative
would eliminate this type of financial incentive to abuse the
Unfair Competition Law, while preserving the consumer protection
elements in the law.
San Luis Obispo is comprised of small businesses.
If we don’t put an end to these lawsuits through this initiative,
we could be faced with the businesses that provide our goods and
services leaving California or closing altogether. It’s
time the people of California hold personal injury attorneys accountable
for their actions and stop shakedown lawsuits.
Sincerely,
Linda K. Okun, Executive Director
