Dear Editor:
Re: “Don't Stiff Asbestos Victims,”
4/22/04
I agree with your editorial (“Don't Stiff
Asbestos Victims,” 4/22/04), but there’s something
more your readers should know about asbestos lawsuits and the
lawyers behind them.
Personal injury lawyers are creating havoc in
our civil justice system by pursuing asbestos “victims”
and subsequent lawsuits resulting in huge attorneys’ fees.
Meritless asbestos litigation that may prove to be lucrative takes
precedent over claims by those truly harmed by exposure. What’s
more, it’s the taxpayers who absorb the hefty legal costs
as many businesses that never even manufactured asbestos ultimately
go bankrupt.
Let’s hope that the noise level on abusive
asbestos litigation catches the attention of our elected officials
and that they use their influence to restore some sanity in our
legal system.
Sincerely,
Linda K. Okun, Executive Director
