Dear Editor:

Re: “Courts try to make jury duty more palatable,” April 29, 2004

The Wall Street Journal’s acknowledgement of government incentives for jurors proves that serving on a jury is a necessity for the system to thrive, as jurors play a vital role in deciding the validity of the facts in a case (“Courts try to make jury duty more palatable,” April 29, 2004).

Being respectful of juror’s time and needs is a small price to pay to change the public’s disdainful attitude toward jury duty and increase the nation’s dwindling pool of jurors. Our justice system depends on citizens who answer the call of jury service. There are typically millions of dollars at stake and small or large businesses could fold based on their decisions.

The more attractive jury service looks, the more citizens will have a chance to be judged by a fair and representative jury from the community.

Sincerely,

Linda K. Okun, Executive Director
